Opening Day Fixtures Announced

And so we begin again. The ever shortening close season window has now slammed shut. Today’s unveiling of a shiny set of fixtures means the countdown to another season has begun. Focus naturally falls on the opening day, as fans jostle to see their first away trip and hope for a gentle start to the season.

As is the norm, there are few breathtaking fixtures - champions Man Utd travel to West Brom in one of the more intriguing ties, whilst usual title rivals Chelsea travel to Stoke. It’s a mixed bag for the promoted sides - QPR host Bolton and Norwich have an encouraging visit to frequent slow starters Wigan. Swansea have a much tougher task, away at a Man City side keen to hit the ground running. Arsenal will hope to avoid another meltdown against Newcastle, whilst a revamped Liverpool side host Sunderland.

In the also ran column, Wolves and Blackburn repeat their epic season closer, Fulham and Villa’s new bosses face off, and Spurs and Everton play each other on the first day for what seems like the hundredth time. It won’t be vital to the final standings, but the first set of fixtures is still something special. The visible face of another leviathan of a football season, it provides a tangible target with two months to go before a ball is kicked. United and Chelsea fans can dream of an emphatic away win to grab an early advantage. Norwich will fancy the kind of shock victory Blackpool grabbed at the DW last season. Each fan, player and manager has a target in front of them. It may be mid-summer, but the season has begun.
