My love of Fifa 11

Last night I played Fifa Football 2011 on my flatmate’s Play Station 3 for about four hours. I was a little bit surprised when I suddenly stepped up off the sofa to get biscuits and realised it was half past one in the morning. There’s something about a game that’s based on a real life game that conceptually is utterly ridiculous. But equally, there’s something in the flow and entertainment of a good Fifa session that I find absolutely compelling.
Part of the joy of the game is that you can create your very own “virtual pro"- an avatar of yourself which you can create and establish a career with, beginning as a player, then moving up to be a player-manager and finally a manager. I decided not to use my own name, so instead my player goes by the handle of Ascis Gel Kayano. He’s a forward and started off with Fulham; having had a good season there, though, he was offered a contract with Barcelona. So now there’s a virtual version of myself (albeit one who doesn’t bear my name), who’s playing upfront alongside David Villa and Leo Messi.
I guess one of the things that’s so exciting about all this is that we spend so much time watching football on TV - and now we’re able to put ourselves on the big screen, in a way that’s so absolutely realistic as to look like an outside broadcast from a game. So I’m not going to stop watching live football - but it’s a pleasure to have a different way of experiencing the beautiful game…
