Saints on their way up?

After a troublesome few years, things are finally starting to look up on the south coast. Southampton Football Club are celebrating their 125th anniversary and are looking to gain promotion to the Championship following an excellent campaign last season. Despite a ten point deduction at the start of the season and much rebuilding of the squad throughout, Saints managed to finish only a couple of points outside the playoff places. Without the deduction, they would have finished only three points from automatic promotion.

It is no surprise then, that many are tipping the south-coast club to win League 1 this year. Alan Pardew has already added a few new faces to a squad he claims he is building to win the Championship, nevermind League 1, and they seem to be settling in well. If League 1 top scorer, Ricky Lambert, can break the 30 goal margin again next season then, with a little help from his colleagues, Saints should be able to secure, at the very least, a playoff berth.

Southampton have also released a new home kit in the style of the first kit Saints ever wore. A white shirt with red sash is quite different to the usual red and white stripes, but it is proving immensely popular. You know what that means fans - new toys, hand towels, and scarves are also on their way! Saints also go without a sponsor this year in commemoration of their 125 years of footballing history.

The truth is, Southampton Football Club has a proud and long history and they are a club that deserves to play at a higher level. They have unfortunately had less than scrupulous chairmen in the past who have sent the club down to where they find themselves today. The new chairman, back-room staff and manager seem to have the right ethics and ambition to take the club forward and, with a bit of luck, the Saints should be marching into the Championship at the end of this upcoming season.
