Campbell to Newcastle
As the new football season approaches, the number of transfer deals have started to increase. The World Cup is over, we have all seen the new fosters tv ad, and focus can now return to the upcoming season. One team that will be closely watched in the coming weeks will be Newcastle United. Their return to the Premier League after only one season in the Championship will be interesting to say the least. Will this team keep their status as a top-flight team or will they struggle like so many do when they make the jump from Championship to Premiership?
They have certainly stated their intentions with their latest signing. Newcastle have captured veteran centre-back, Sol Campbell, on a one year contract. The former England international may be 35 years old but he brings with him a huge amount of Premiership experience and, having played for Arsenal only last season, everyone knows he can still cut it at this level. He will be invaluable not only on the field but off the field as well, as a role model for some of Newcastle’s younger players.
The one year contract is a great deal for both parties here. Campbell will be a crucial part in helping Newcastle remain in the Premiership but after that, when Newcastle want to progress, there is a chance his services won’t be needed. Newcastle will be looking at much younger players. Campbell, on the other hand, has the chance to finish his career at a top club. He is there to do a job and help keep the “Toon” up, what happens after that is unknown. Newcastle have done a shrewd bit of business here and could do worse than get a few more signings like Campbell.
