Joe Cole moves to Liverpool FC
Finally some good news for Liverpool. Joe Cole, released by Chelsea after the 2009/10 season due to a failure to agree a contract, has joined the Reds on the synthetic sports pitch for a 4 year contract. The news has been greeted with excitement by the majority of fans for a number of reasons, least not being that Joey Cole is flipping good.
After a long time away from football’s absolute top table Liverpool fans have got used to living off of scraps dropped by Manchester United, Arsenal and latterly Chelsea. Winning the European Champion’s League was a rare success but even that did little to sate the fans appetite for domestic success and in particular for winning the domestic league.
A series of hyped but disappointing signings over the years, think Mark Gonzales, Ryan Babel etc, has wearied the average fan who have watched their rivals snap up some of the world’s greatest players striding onward and upward to season after season of success.
So why has the arrival of Joe Cole been considered anything but another false dawn?
The simple fact is, as was intimated by John Terry at the World Cup recently when discussing the lack of play for Cole in the England games, he is a genuinely gifted player who can open up an opponent’s back line and create goals and opportunities.
He is more than comfortable on the ball having talent rarely seen in a footballer and is considered so highly in world football that it was rumoured that, in addition to Arsenal and Tottenham, AC Milan and Real Madrid were looking to sign him.
With new manager Roy Hodgson now in place at Anfield it is hoped that this will be the first of a number of signings that can turn round the fortunes of one of the worlds premier and most revered football teams.
