Southampton 2010/11 Season
What a massive season this is going to be for the Saints. After a very positive 2009/10 season in which the team started with -10 points, there is huge expectation that Southampton will storm to the top of the league and win it comfortably. In fact, if it wasn’t for the -10 points, they may have even managed promotion last season.
As a fan, I would have to admit, I also have some pretty hefty expectations for the team this year. They play attractive football and play it the right way with the ball on the ground. If League 1 top goalscorer Ricky Lambert manages another 31 goals and is joined by star prospect Adam Lallana getting another 20, then I can’t see why, with the addition of some quality centre backs, we can’t walk this league. The only issue seems to be playing away on some awful pitches in bad weather where they have clearly never heard the phrase “sports pitch drainage“.
In the past the issue with Southampton was always losing their best players to clubs who would offer money that could not be refused. However, now we have great financial backing and the club’s future is looking pretty secure, Southampton are no longer a selling club. This means we can keep a hold of Lambert, Lallana, Schneiderlin and any other great players who make their name at Saints.
Alan Pardew is reportedly building a squad for the Championship so, if we gain promotion in 2010/11, we should be able to challenge for promotion again in our first season in the Championship. The plan seems to be to get Saints back to the Premiership as quickly as possible. With everything that the Southampton fans have had to endure in the last 5 or so years, none of us are complaining about that. Come on the Saints!
